Cutting Taxes for Allegheny County Families
Congressman Altmire cut taxes for nearly 540,000 Allegheny County families this year by voting for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Making Work Pay Tax Credit -- which went into effect on April 1, 2009 -- is the largest middle class tax cut in American history. With Americans struggling to make ends meet during this current economic recession, this tax cut will provide tax relief to 95 percent of working families. Small Business “Access to Capital” Workshop at La Roche College
On August 14, 2009, Congressman Altmire held a workshop at La Roche College that provided more than 90 local entrepreneurs with helpful information about how to obtain capital in today’s tough economy. Featured speakers at the event included representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration, the University of Pittsburgh’s Small Business Development Center, t he Pennsylvania Department of Banking, and SCORE - America’s Small Business Counselors. Helping North Hills Police Departments Purchase Needed Equipment

Congressman Jason Altmire has secured federal funding for both the Shaler and the Ross Township Police Departments to help them purchase new communications equipment. This upgraded technology will make police operations more efficient and improve public safety throughout the North Hills. Meeting with Local Doctors about Health Care Reform
On August 19, 2009, Congressman Altmire met with members of the Allegheny County Medical Society to discuss health care reform. Throughout the summer, Altmire has been meeting with health care providers, small business owners, seniors and families across western Pennsylvania to discuss how to improve America's health care system.

Town Hall Meeting on Alle-Kiski Valley’s Transportation Needs
On April 15, 2009, Congressman Altmire held a town hall meeting with Allegheny Valley residents to talk about local transportation needs. As Congress rewrites the Highway Reauthorization Bill this year, Congressman Altmire will play a critical role in advocating for the region’s priorities. For more information, see:

Congressman Altmire secured $142,500 in the FY 2009 budget to help transform the old Natrona Ballfield into the Natrona Recreation and Art Park. This remodeled park will be the cornerstone for Natrona’s revitalization and will help to attract new families and new businesses to the town. It is expected that the park will also help to lower crime rates by providing young people with a safe place where they can engage in community and educational activities. Meeting with Allegheny Valley Chamber of Commerce
On March 13, 2009, Congressman Altmire met with the Allegheny Valley Chamber of Commerce to talk about health care reform and how he is working to jumpstart America’s economy. As Chairman of a House Small Business Subcommittee, Altmire has consistently worked to lower taxes and increase resources for small business owners and local entrepreneurs.

On August 20, 2009, Congressman Altmire spoke to the Hampton Rotary Club about health care reform and other key issues being debated in Congress. Members from several other North Hills Rotary Clubs – including the Shaler, Etna, McCandless and Fox Chapel Rotaries – also participated in the event.

Non-Profit Grants Workshop in Springdale
Local non-profits offer vital services to western Pennsylvania families. In recent months, however, many non-profits throughout western Pennsylvania have struggled to make ends meet amidst increased demands and declining revenues. To help non-profits serve their communities, Congressman Altmire held a non-profit grants workshop in Springdale, PA on August 15, 2009. At this workshop, representatives from federal and state agencies shared information about what government grants are available for non-profits and what non-profits can do to improve their applications. 

Listening to Local Veterans
This April, Congressman Altmire met with members of the 4th District Veterans Advisory Board at the Springdale VFW / American Legion to talk about what he can do to help western Pennsylvania’s veterans. Since coming to Congress in 2007, Altmire has had six legislative initiatives signed into law that improve services for veterans and military families.

Helping Allegheny County Schools Through the Economic Downturn

By voting for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Congressman Altmire provided 12 Allegheny County school districts serving children in his district with an additional $16.5 million in federal funding. The funding will help Allegheny County schools prevent teacher lay-offs and continue to invest in important educational initiatives despite the current economic recession. On April 4, 2009, Congressman Altmire hosted an awards ceremony at the Northland Public Library for the 27th Annual Congressional Art Competition. Each year, all 435 congressional districts host art competitions to celebrate the talents of America’s young artists. Students from across Pennsylvania’s Fourth Congressional District competed in this year’s competition.
