Cutting Taxes for Lawrence County Families
Congressman Altmire cut taxes for more than 42,000 Lawrence County families this year by voting for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Making Work Pay Tax Credit -- which went into effect on April 1, 2009 -- is the largest middle class tax cut in American history. With Americans struggling to make ends meet during this current economic recession, this tax cut will provide tax relief to 95 percent of working families. Town Hall Meeting on Lawrence County’s Transportation Needs
On April 9, 2009, Congressman Altmire held a town hall meeting with Lawrence County residents to talk about local transportation needs. As Congress rewrites the Highway Reauthorization Bill this year, Congressman Altmire will play a critical role in advocating for the region’s priorities. Meeting with the New Castle Rotary
On August 17, 2009, Congressman Altmire spoke to the New Castle Rotary about health care reform and other legislation currently being debated in Congress.  Congressman Altmire also discussed what he has done to bolster economic development in Lawrence County.

New Castle Mail Processing Facility

In April, the United States Postal Service (USPS) announced that it was considering consolidating the New Castle Mail Processing Facility with its Pittsburgh facility. This consolidation could have led to significant job losses and diminished mail service. To prevent this from happening, Congressman Altmire joined with leaders at the federal, state and local level to show USPS that the New Castle Mail Processing Facility is vitally important to our community. Following a concentrated community effort, USPS announced that it would keep the New Castle Mail Processing Facility open.

Meeting with Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce
On April 21, 2009, Congressman Altmire met with the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce to talk about health care reform and how he is working to jumpstart America’s economy. As Chairman of a House Small Business Subcommittee, Altmire has consistently worked to lower taxes and increase resources for small business owners and local entrepreneurs.

On March 27, 2009, Congressman Altmire joined local leaders and community members to celebrate the addition of the Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle to the National Register of Historic Places. This prestigious honor will help to preserve this beloved local landmark for years to come.

 

Helping Lawrence County Schools Through the Economic Downturn
By voting for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Congressman Altmire provided eight Lawrence County school districts with an additional $10.3 million in federal funding. This funding will help Lawrence County schools prevent teacher lay-offs and continue to invest in important educational initiatives despite the current economic recession.

Listening to Local Seniors
In April, Congressman Altmire held a special town hall meeting with the AARP to listen to local seniors’ concerns. Altmire discussed how he has worked to improve the Medicare prescription drug program and how the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will help seniors who are struggling to cover their daily expenses during this recession.

Strengthening Resources for Local Law Enforcement

To help them deter crime and keep local families safe, Congressman Altmire provided the New Castle and Ellwood City police departments with an additional $142,000 in federal funding by voting for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This funding will help to ensure that law enforcement officials facing budget shortfalls during this economic recession will still have the resources they need to be effective. On January 21, 2009, Congressman Altmire met with a group of students from New Castle High School to talk to them about what it is like to be a congressman and what his goals are for the next two years. After their meeting, Congressman Altmire took the students on a personal tour of the U.S. Capitol and showed them the platform where President Obama was sworn in the day before.
