The Fourth Congressional District includes parts of Mercer County, including Farrell, Hermitage, and West Middlesex. Congressman Altmire frequently visits with local residents, tours area businesses, and attends community events. Here are additional details about some of Congressman Altmire’s activities in Mercer County:
Cutting Taxes for Mercer County Families
Congressman Altmire cut taxes for more than 49,000 Mercer County families this year by voting for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Making Work Pay Tax Credit -- which went into effect on April 1, 2009 -- is the largest middle class tax cut in American history. With Americans struggling to make ends meet during this current economic recession, this tax cut will provide tax relief to 95 percent of working families. Town Halls on Health Care Reform
On August 26, 2009, Congressman Altmire held a town hall in Farrell, PA on health care reform that drew nearly 1,000 western Pennsylvanians. For two hours, Altmire answered local residents’ questions and concerns about how health care reform would affect seniors, small businesses and other local stakeholders. This is Almire’s second town hall in Mercer County on health care reform this year: In May, Congressman Altmire also participated in an AARP Town Hall on health care reform in Hermitage. Farrell High School Visit
On March 27, 2009, Congressman Altmire met with students, educators and community leaders at Farrell High School to discuss how the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will benefit local students. This legislation will provide the Farrell Area School District with more than $1 million in additional federal funding over the next two years. These funds will help the school district invest in much-needed resources that can help improve student achievement. Strengthening Resources for Hermitage Police Department
By voting for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Congressman Altmire provided the Hermitage Police Department with a boost in federal funding that will help it deter crime and keep local families safe. This funding will help to ensure that law enforcement officials facing budget shortfalls during this economic recession will still have the resources they need to be effective.
