Congressman Jason Altmire is serving his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he represents all or parts of six counties in western Pennsylvania. He has quickly established himself as one of Congress' leading voices on health care, small business and veterans' issues.
He is co-chair of the New Democratic Coalition’s task force on health care reform and serves as a subcommittee chairman on the Small Business Committee. His successful effort to guarantee bonuses for combat wounded veterans garnered national attention.
In all, Jason has authored 24 different legislative initiatives that have passed the House, 17 of which have been signed into law. He is also credited with directing $120 million in federal funding to western Pennsylvania for key economic development projects.
He has been profiled in a number of national media outlets and has been a guest on a variety of national television news programs, including Comedy Central’s popular political satire, The Colbert Report.
Voting Record: Jason is consistently recognized as one of the most independent members of Congress. A recent non-partisan study of congressional votes identified him as having the most centrist voting record in Congress. He is the only member of the House to have made every one of the more than 2,500 votes cast during the past two sessions of Congress.
Background: Jason grew up in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, where he was a record-breaking two-sport athlete at Burrell High School . He attended Florida State University, where he was a member of the school's first Sugar Bowl championship football team. He has a Master's Degree in Health Administration from the George Washington University. Prior to his election to Congress in 2006, Jason spent 15 years in health care policy, working as a congressional staffer, a hospital association executive and for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Jason currently lives in the North Hills of Allegheny County with his wife, Kelly, and their two daughters.
